The BVI Spring Charter Yacht Show was held November 16-17 at Village Cay Marina on Tortola. It was a relatively small show with just over 20 yachts so it was easy to see them all and spend time getting to know the crews. Although small, the show was packed with gorgeous motor yachts, monohulls and catamarans.
I was graciously invited to lunch both days aboard two of the finest yachts in the fleet, the 76 foot Matrix catamaran Akasha and the 120 foot Broward Freedom.
Friday’s lunch on Akasha was as set up al fresco in the aft cockpit. We were joined by Capt. Oswaldo Cruz who was both professional and fun. It”s obvious that he enjoys his job and is excited to introduce his guests to the beauties of the islands both above and below the crystal, clear waters as they also offer SCUBA diving from the yacht. Chef Briar Smith is professionally trained and created a menu to delight the senses. She excels in both producing tantalizing treats and beautiful presentations. Deckhand Tiagio and stewardess Priya round out the crew to attend to your every need while on charter.

Saturday’s lunch on Freedom was equally elegant but with a different atmosphere. Award-winning Chef Joseph Stiles served an incredible repast in the formal dining area. Capt. Matt Doudera, also our host for a jammin’ cocktail party under the stars on the spacious flybridge the night before, joined us at the beautifully set table for an impressive 3 course meal that creatively awakened the palette. As you can see from the photos below, his presentation was so awesome that it seemed a shame to mess it up by eating it ! Stewardess Jen seemed able to anticipate our every need before we thought about it and was always wearing a smile. The fourth crew member, a deckhand, helps complete this amiable “creme of the crop” crew.
